It is important to make sure that you do not overdrive your laser tube. Driving more electrical current through the tube than the tube can handle will shorten the life of the tube. In order to ensure you're operating at a safe current level an ammeter is recommended. A 30 mA meter will cover typical hobby/small business lasers. We recommend a 30mA Panel-Mount Ammeter. Analog meters are preferred over digital ones because they have a faster response rate.

To install the ammeter, first cut a hole in the machine and mount the meter. A good place for this is near the control pad. A hole saw that can be used with a drill works well for making the hole.

Once the meter is mounted, you will need to wire it to the tube. Warning: Laser cutters involve high-voltage components. If you are not 100% confident in your ability to work with dangerous electrical voltages safely seek the assistance of a professional.

The ammeter should be connected in series between the tube and ground.
